Scheduler Pallet in Tangle Network
The Scheduler Pallet is a key component of the Tangle Network, responsible for managing tasks that need to be executed at specific points in time. This pallet allows you to schedule calls to be dispatched at a future block number, thus providing the network with the ability to execute deferred or recurring tasks.
Introduction to the Scheduler Pallet
The Scheduler Pallet uses the concept of "agenda" to manage tasks. An agenda is simply a list of tasks that are scheduled for execution in a specific block. When a block is finalized, all tasks within the agenda of that block are executed. Each task is associated with a priority, and tasks within an agenda are executed in decreasing order of their priority.
Scheduling a Task
You can schedule a task by calling the schedule
function. This function requires the following parameters:
when
: The block number when the task should be executed.priority
: The priority of the task. Tasks with higher priority are executed before tasks with lower priority within the same block.call
: The call to be dispatched when the task is executed.
The schedule
function returns a TaskAddress
which can be used to cancel or reschedule the task.

Canceling a Task
A scheduled task can be canceled before it's executed by calling the cancel function with the TaskAddress returned by the schedule function:

Checking if a Task is Scheduled
You can check if a specific task is scheduled by calling the is_scheduled function:

Rescheduling a Task
A scheduled task can be rescheduled to a different block by calling the reschedule function:

Execution of Tasks
The execution of tasks is handled automatically by the Tangle Network. When a block is finalized, the Scheduler Pallet checks if there are any tasks in the agenda of that block. If there are, it executes them in the order of their priority. If a task fails, it's removed from the agenda and won't be retried in future blocks.
Example Use Case: Recurring Tasks
The Scheduler Pallet can be used to create recurring tasks. For instance, if you want to update the exchange rate of a token every 10 blocks, you can schedule a task that updates the exchange rate and then schedules itself to be executed again after 10 blocks.
